Deck Repair in Corryton, TN
Riverview Decks provides deck repair services across Corryton and northeast Knox County.

Corryton is rural Knox County. Lots run large, homes sit back from the road, and a fair number of decks out here were built without permits, without footing inspections, and without the structural details that make a deck last.
That is not a knock on anyone. It is just how a lot of work got done in this part of the county over the past 25 years.
The consequence is that the failure points tend to be hidden.
Posts that look fine from above have been losing integrity at grade for years. Ledger boards attached without a proper membrane have been quietly moving water into the rim joist of the house. Stair stringers sitting on bare soil have been softening from the bottom up.
By the time any of this shows on the surface, the underlying problem is usually well advanced.
We assess the full structure before we quote anything. What we find gets documented in writing before any work begins.

What Tends to Fail on Corryton Decks
- Post bases. Direct ground contact or post bases that retain moisture are the most common structural failure point we find in this area. Rot starts at grade and works upward while the deck above shows no visible sign of it.
- Ledger connections. Older ledger installations without a waterproof membrane behind the flashing allow water into the house framing over time. The rim joist damage that results is invisible until the ledger comes off. When we pull a ledger and find soft wood behind it, that gets addressed before anything else goes back on.
- Stair stringers. Stringers sitting at or near grade, particularly without a concrete landing beneath them, are the first framing members to go on most Corryton properties. We replace them, set a proper landing at the base, and recut stair geometry where movement has thrown the run and rise out of tolerance.
- Footings. Shallow poured footings on clay-heavy northeast Knox County soil shift over time. Where they have moved enough to affect the deck's level or plumb, we excavate and repour, or install helical piers where soil conditions call for it.
- Surface boards. The most visible problem and often not the most important one. On a structurally sound deck, board replacement is straightforward. On a deck with compromised framing below, it is the wrong place to start.

Repair or Replace
When isolated components are failing on an otherwise sound structure, deck repair is the right call.
When the ledger has been moving water into the house, the posts are compromised at multiple points, and the framing has softened broadly, repair costs start approaching what a full rebuild would run.
We present both options in writing when the assessment supports it. Details on full replacement and new construction are on our deck replacement and deck building pages.

I cannot speak enough about the professionalism of this company and everyone associated with it. All steps in the project were well laid out in a portal, and although my deck is small and simple when compared with other jobs, I was treated as a valued client every step of the way. This business is a first class operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cosmetic repairs generally are not affected. Structural work involving the ledger, framing, posts, or footings may require a permit through Knox County Development Services regardless of the original build’s status. We identify what applies during the assessment and handle any required submissions.
Probe the base of each post at grade and check for soft or punky wood. Look for rust staining at post base hardware, lateral movement when the post is loaded, or visible separation between the post and the beam above. On low-clearance decks with limited visual access, we use a probe during the assessment.
No. A new surface over failing framing produces a deck that looks repaired and continues to deteriorate underneath. We assess framing condition before recommending any surface work. If the framing is sound, a re-deck is a good option. If it is not, we say so.
