Most decks in Amherst were built somewhere between the late 1970s and the mid-1990s. That age shows up differently depending on how the deck was built, what it’s made of, and how much attention it’s received over the years.

Riverview Decks handles deck repairs throughout West Knoxville. If your deck has a problem, we’ll tell you exactly what it is, what fixing it involves, and whether repair makes more financial sense than replacement at this point.

Repair or Replace — How to Think About It

The honest answer is that it depends on what’s wrong and what the repair costs in relation to what a replacement would cost.

Repair makes sense when the frame is structurally sound and problems are isolated to the surface, railings, or specific components. A deck with solid joists, sound posts, and a good ledger connection can often get another ten to fifteen years out of targeted repairs at a fraction of replacement cost.

Replacement makes more sense when framing rot is widespread, the ledger connection is compromised and the rim joist behind it is damaged, posts have shifted enough that the foundation needs work, or the original build has so many code deficiencies that bringing it up to standard costs nearly as much as building new. On Amherst’s older housing stock, we see all of these. We’ll give you a straight read on which category your deck falls into during the site visit.

Repair Cost Estimates

Repair pricing varies too much by scope to give a meaningful table. A few honest reference points:

Single board replacement typically runs $50 to $150 per board, depending on material and accessibility. Railing post replacement runs $100 to $300 per post. Joist sistering is priced by the linear foot and the accessibility of the framing. Ledger repair or replacement, including addressing any water damage found behind it, is scoped after we open up the wall assembly.

We provide written quotes after seeing the deck. For repair work specifically, we don’t quote from photos or descriptions; the actual condition of the framing underneath is what drives the number, and we can’t see that without being there.

What Our Customers Say

Nate and his team were professional and efficient. We were in constant communication.

I have 3 dogs that the workers were mindful of by keeping the gate closed and not leaving any nails or screws as a hazard.

JC and/or Nate were here everyday to ensure quality and perfection.

There is no one else I would recommend for your deck both new or repairs. I only wish I could give more than 5 stars!

This company is a top class business. Every aspect of the job was conducted in a professional and respectful manner. My project was small when compared to their usual jobs, but Nate and Joe made me feel that they truly valued me as a client.

Frequently Asked Questions

Call us at (865) 801-4545 and we’ll get a site visit scheduled. If you’re seeing movement at the ledger connection or structural instability, tell us that when you call and we’ll prioritize it.
Minor repairs, replacing boards, fixing railings, swapping out hardware, generally don’t. Structural repairs involving the ledger, posts, or framing may require a Knox County permit depending on scope. We’ll let you know what applies to your project and handle the filing if a permit is needed.
For pressure-treated wood, usually yes. For cedar or older species, a perfect match isn’t always possible because the existing boards have weathered to a different color over the years. We’ll show you what the material looks like and let you decide whether the difference is acceptable before we start.
It can, depending on what we find. If structural repairs require a permit and we discover the original build has code deficiencies, those may need to be addressed as part of the permitted repair. We’ll tell you upfront if that’s the case.
Surface repairs and railing work typically run one to three days. Structural repairs involving framing, ledger work, or post replacement take longer and depend on what we find once we open things up. You’ll have a realistic timeline in your written quote.
