New Freestanding Deck With Patio Extension
— how we turned an empty backyard into a beautiful, relaxing outdoor space

Part One: Backyard Inspection
Our client’s backyard was about as basic as it gets: just grass and a door.
They had a couple of plastic chairs and a folding table sitting directly on the lawn, which meant every time they wanted to sit outside, they had to deal with uneven ground, wet grass, and mud tracked back into the house.
There was no defined outdoor living space. No place to set up a grill without worrying about scorching the grass. No real spot to entertain friends or family.

Trying to use the backyard meant sitting on ground that wasn’t level, and dealing with muddy spots after rain.
Wrong elevation
Without a deck or proper landing, this was just a door to nowhere. Completely wasted outdoor access.
Weathered concrete step
This concrete step was stained with years of algae and mildew. Slippery when wet and barely functional. This needed to go.
Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting
We designed a 20’x11′ composite deck with picture-frame borders, tight 12″ joist spacing for a solid feel, aluminum railing for safety, and wide steps connecting cleanly to the patio. A true outdoor living space, planned right from the ground up.
Part Three: Ready For Construction
After securing the permits, we quickly got to work.
We started by digging footings and setting posts, a ledger board, a double beam, and joists to create a stable, code-compliant foundation.
Next, we installed composite decking boards, aluminum railing, and wide, wraparound steps for easy transition to the yard and extra seating.
Finally, we poured a concrete patio that connects directly to the stairs, creating a smooth flow from house to deck to patio.

Deckorators Composite - Venture Series Sandbar
We installed 120 sq. ft. of composite decking, perfect for our clients to enjoy a low-maintenance deck. It’s durable, resistant to water or UV damage, and you can walk on barefoot because it stays cold and splinter-free.
Westbury Aluminum Railing
We installed all straight and stair aluminum railing up to the highest standards in the industry. There were 40 linear feet of straight railing and 4 linear feet of stairs railing, all in Westbury C-10 metal railing with lifetime warranty.
KDHT Lumber Framing
We had to use 192 sq. ft. of framing material. For both ledger board and framing, we used 2’x10′ lumber 12″ on-center. This is the most cost-efficient framing material, and our go-to for all deck building projects.
