Pet-Friendly Decks: Best Materials and Designs for Dogs and Cats in Tennessee

Your dog deserves a deck that doesn't turn into a sauna under their paws or splinter between their toes.

Pet-Friendly Decking with Riverview Decks

We started paying real attention to pet-friendly decking about five years ago when a client called us back because her golden retriever kept getting splinters. That got us thinking. Turns out, most traditional deck materials weren’t designed with animals in mind. Wood splinters, gets too hot, traps claws. Standard composite can be slippery when wet and still heats up like a griddle in July.

So we did what we always do: we tested materials, talked to manufacturers, and built decks specifically for families with pets. Three dogs, two cats, doesn’t matter. We’ve learned which surfaces stay cool, which ones provide traction, and which finishes hold up when your Lab decides to dig at the corner every single day.

The deck frame matters too. Pets are curious, and small ones can squeeze through railing gaps that technically meet code but weren’t designed with a terrier in mind. We adjust spacing, we reinforce corners, and we think about how animals actually use outdoor space. Because a deck that works for people but stresses out your pets isn’t really working.

I am super pleased with my deck. The job was completed very quickly but correctly and they communicated with me throughout the whole process letting me know what would be done when.

The deck is high quality and the small issues that I did have were addressed right away. Would definitely recommend these guys to anyone.

How Much Does Pet-Friendly Decking Cost in Tennessee

Pet-friendly decking runs between $32 and $52 per square foot installed, based on past project estimates we’ve completed. That range probably feels wide, so let me explain what pushes a project toward one end or the other.

Five key factors that Affect The Price:

These figures come from actual jobs we’ve completed, but every property and every pet situation is different. Contact us with details about your space and your animals so we can give you an accurate quote.

Budget and Timeline

Money and time. Those are the two things everyone wants to nail down before we start.
A pet-friendly deck costs more than throwing down the cheapest lumber you can find, but let’s put it in perspective. If you spend $12,000 on a 250-square-foot deck and your dogs use it daily for 15 years, that’s about $2.19 per day. Your pets give you companionship, loyalty, and probably some gray hairs. Giving them a safe, comfortable outdoor space where they can actually relax seems like a fair trade. We offer financing if the full amount up front doesn’t work for you. Split it into payments and let your pets start enjoying the space now instead of waiting until you’ve saved every penny.
Most pet-friendly deck projects take two to four weeks from start to finish. We show up when scheduled, we work efficiently, and we understand that having construction in your yard stresses out some animals. We keep our work area contained, we don’t leave hazards lying around, and we clean up thoroughly each day so your pets can safely access the rest of the yard. Weather might delay us occasionally, but we communicate clearly and stick to realistic timelines. You’ll know what to expect and when to expect it.

Common Questions About Pet-Friendly Decking

Certain composites will, yes. Standard dark composite can actually get hotter than wood, which surprised us too when we first tested it. But manufacturers have developed heat-reflective formulas specifically for this problem. These materials use lighter colors and special pigments that deflect rather than absorb heat. On a 90-degree day, regular composite might hit 135 degrees while heat-reflective composite stays around 95 to 100. Still warm, but your dog can walk on it without burning their pads. We only recommend materials we’ve actually tested in Tennessee weather.
Absolutely. Building code allows up to four inches between balusters, which works fine for people but leaves gaps big enough for small breeds to slip through. We reduce spacing to two or three inches depending on your dog’s size. For really tiny dogs or puppies, we can install additional barriers or use cable railing systems with tighter spacing. We’ve done decks for Yorkies, Dachshunds, even a family with pet rabbits. It’s just a matter of measuring your animals and adjusting the design accordingly.
Pet-friendly composite is non-porous, which means urine and dirt sit on the surface instead of soaking in. That sounds bad, but it actually makes cleaning easier. You hose it off and everything rinses away. For families who want their dogs to use the deck as a bathroom spot, we can build in a designated area with drainage and either artificial turf or gravel that handles waste better. Most clients train their pets to use the yard instead, but we’ve built both setups successfully. Regular cleaning with soap and water keeps the deck fresh without much effort.
We reinforce vulnerable spots. Corners get extra blocking behind the fascia boards so there’s nothing to dig into. If your dog chews, we avoid wood trim where possible and use composite or metal alternatives. The deck frame is pressure-treated lumber or steel, neither of which appeals to chewers. We can’t train your dog, but we can build a deck that stands up to destructive habits better than standard construction. Some behaviors you just have to work around, and we’ve gotten pretty good at anticipating what dogs will target.
