Part One: The deck Inspection
Ray and Deanna had a gorgeous lakefront home, but their deck was telling a different story.
When we walked the property for the first time, the issues were clear.
Every year, the wood boards needed sanding, staining, or sealing just to keep up appearances. The railings were chunky and blocked what should have been a stunning view. And the stairs? They were narrow and dropped straight down onto bare dirt.
Our job was to make sure their new deck lives up to the rest of the home and the views surrounding it. We knew what we had to do.
A closer look at the issues we found with the old deck...
High-maintenance
The original deck boards requires constant staining and sealing just to survive each season.
Bulky railings
The balusters were thick and closely spaced, turning what should’ve been a panoramic view into a wall of wood.
Steep, narrow stairs
The original staircase was uncomfortably steep and narrow. The risers didn’t meet current building code.
Unstable landing
The stairs dropped straight onto bare ground. There was no stable surface to step onto, especially after rain.
Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting
Before a single board was cut, our design lead engineered solutions for every problem on the old deck. The plans address everything from unsafe, out-of-code stairs and blocked views to rotting wood boards.
Part Three: Ready For Construction
Construction of the new deck took 15 days, beginning on August 13 and ending on August 28.
August 13
We tore off the old deck, starting with a clean slate.
August 14-20
We poured new concrete footings installed new pressure-treated framing.
August 21-26
We laid down new Deckorators composite decking, picture-framed along the border.
August 28
The deck is finished, and we had a final walkthrough with Ray and Deanna.

Custom Concrete Stair Landing
No more stepping into mud. A 4’x4′ concrete pad with a 10″ footing gives every person who walks down these stairs a stable, slip-resistant place to land.
